Why choose to tile your walls?

Tiled walls look great, are easy to clean, keep new and shiny looking and most importantly give customers a wealth of choice in design and colour. Compared to wallpaper or paint there are limitless options in colour, design and texture. Tiles don't have the issue of staining and fading in colour unlike its competitors paint and wallpaper. They are functional and easy to maintain. You can also make a statement about your home and your character with tiles. Why not choose a glossy polished finish tile to show your bright and brave side or a matt natural stone look to give your home a calming warm atmosphere. You can also create a glamorous continental look with marble effect porcelain tiles. The options are just endless here at Tile Ideas.

What is a wall tile?

Wall tiles are just like floor tiles but they have more creativity in the way they are designed. The surface can be bumpy, raised, 3D, rippled or beveled whereas floor tiles can't vary that much for safety reasons. One major issue is that some wall tiles are not suitable to use on the floor, so you cannot have the same tile running throughout the room. These are usually ceramic tiles. If it's a porcelain wall tile this is usually perfectly fine to use on the floors and walls.

How much does it cost to tile walls?

Like all home improvement projects the cost normally depends on the material used. Tiling your walls will most likely cost more than painting or putting up wallpaper but it will last longer and look presentable even after some years where as the other two options usually do not.

What size is a standard wall tile?

The size of all tiles - floor and wall has changed considerably over the years. 20-30 years ago a 6-inch square tile was the standard when it came to wall tiling. Then for many years it was 20x25cm. These days 30x60cm and even 60x60cm is common place. Tiles have got larger and grander in general. Especially for floors - we are now dealing with 80x80cm as standard for semi-large and large floor spaces. If you are not sure what size tile to use why don't you give us a call on 01842 811944 at Tile ideas and give us your measurements. We'll be more than happy to advise you on what size tile you should be using.

Is it ok to use wall tiles on floors or shower room floors?

It's hugely important to check the material and strength of the wall tile if you want to use it on floor areas. First thing we need to realise is that if tile is porcelain 99% of the time it will be fine for floor and wall areas. This is because porcelain is a very strong man-made material. If the material of our wall tile is ceramic it shouldn't be used on the floors but if it’s a ceramic floor tile this is fine for walls and floors. Natural stone more often that not is ok for both surfaces as they tend to be thick - 10mm or more. But again depending on which type of natural stone it is it's advisable to ask the seller in detail about how to use it and where.

Should I tile full wall or half wall?

A lot of people feel that half tiled walls look better and more stylish than fully tiled walls as the tiles are not overbearing and dominating the room. Also they have the option of painting the upper half of the room whenever they feel like it, cheaply and easily. But from experience we would recommend fully tiling your walls. The main reason for this is that tiles fully seal the walls, this way you won't have problems with leakage and mould. Secondly - tiled surfaces are always easier to clean compared to painted walls, paint can tend come off, stain or discolour. Tiles don't do any of these. Lastly if the wall is half tiled the top edge of the top tile can sometimes leak water in behind it if it's not sealed with silicon properly. Even if it is sealed in time it can go mouldy, discolour and just look unpleasant.
